1970 (S) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Small Date - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1970-S WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A close Class I spread in the clockwise (CW) direction shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, the 0 of the date, and the L in LIBERTY. At obverse Stage A, two parallel scratches run NNW off the crossbar of LIBERTY's L. A scratch heads south from the base of LIBERTY's I, and a long, twisting scratch runs NNW from the top of LIBERTY's E. Left of the W in WE, a gouge runs ESE from the rim, and parallel scratches cross through and under the U in TRUST from NW to SE. At obverse Stage B, only the scratches off the L's crossbar are left; a small gouge appears over the left part of GOD's D, and a gouge lies right of TRUST's S. On the reverse at Stage A, roughly one third of the way up from the first bay's bottom, a scratch runs WSW to ENE, with many other scratches elsewhere on the reverse. In the upper steps under the fourth bay there is a small gouge (dot). At reverse Stage B, only the first-bay scratch remains; one small gouge lies under the A in STATES and another under the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM. John A. Wexler submitted Stage A, and Frank Baumann submitted Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments note that the variety appeared on page 153 of his 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die, which gave it the number 1970-S 1¢ 2-O-I-CW.
