1970 (S) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Small Date - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1970-S WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A very strong Class I spread in the clockwise (CW) direction shows on the letters of LIBERTY, on IN GOD WE TRUST, and on the date. On the obverse, many SW-to-NE scratches cross the letters of WE and the space between WE and TRUST. Over the E in LIBERTY there is a vertical scratch. From the mint mark, a scratch heads NE through the lower part of the 7 and the upper left of the 0 in the date, and under the chin a scratch runs north to south. On the reverse, a scratch heads SE from the upper right of the second T in STATES to the upper right of the first U in PLURIBUS. Right of the top of UNUM's M there is a short diagonal gouge, and left of the base of the T in CENT there is another gouge. Below the Memorial, left of the left post, a short scratch runs SSW to NNE through the field. Joseph Koelling submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-O-I, and the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-01-1970S-101 (029). Breen gives it #2255, Crawford lists it as CDDO-001, and its Coppercoins number is 1970S-1DO-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
