1970 (S) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Small Date - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018

Description

1970-S WDDO-018 is a doubled die obverse on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling is a counterclockwise (CCW) spread pivoting from roughly the 9:00 position, and it shows on the 70 of the date. At obverse Stage A, there is a gouge left of the lower part of the N in IN, and a small gouge on the rim over the second T in TRUST. The obverse at Stage B adds two small gouges (dots) over the 7. Obverse Stage C shows heavy abrasion, a scratch running NNE off the top of the 7, and a curving scratch left of the upper part of GOD's G. On the reverse at Stage A, a short scratch runs SSE from the base of the second T in STATES. Reverse Stage B is the same as Stage A, and reverse Stage C shows many curving scratches. Delma K. Romines submitted Stage A, and Frank Baumann submitted Stage B and Stage C. CONECA lists the variety as 5-O-V and Crawford as CDDO-021; the Cherrypickers' number is FS-01-1970S-103 (030.1), and Breen gives it #2257. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
