1970 (S) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Small Date - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

1970-S WDDO-009 is a doubled die obverse on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling shows beneath the crossbar of the 7 and under the 0. At obverse Stage A, there is a long, almost vertical scratch north of the left part of LIBERTY's T. At obverse Stage B, many SW-to-NE scratches cover the fields on both sides of the bust. At obverse Stage C, heavy abrasion has removed the earlier scratches; a gouge lies right of the base of the 7, and light SW-to-NE scratches lie right of the beard. Reverse Stage A is an early die state (EDS) with no markers noted. At reverse Stage B, there is a gouge right of the top of the fourth column and another over the left part of CENT's E. Almost vertical scratches pass through the S in PLURIBUS and just right of it, a scratch runs NNW to SSE through the upper right of the E in ONE, and other scratches appear across the reverse. At reverse Stage C, heavy abrasion has removed most of the earlier scratches, but the scratch through the upper right of ONE's E remains. The gouge over the left part of CENT's E is still present, while the gouge right of the top of the fourth column has been abraded away. John A. Wexler submitted the variety, and its Coppercoins number is 1970S-1DO-008. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
