1970 (S) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Small Date - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

1970-S WDDO-007 is a doubled die obverse on the 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling shows under the crossbar of LIBERTY's L and over the crossbar of the 7 in the date. Wexler records five obverse stages. At Stage A, below the front of the bust, a strong gouge runs WSW to ENE; Wexler notes this gouge shows on all five stages. Many light SW-to-NE scratches pass through and under IN GOD, and many light north-south scratches lie right of the throat and bowtie. At Stage B, the Stage A scratches have been abraded off, and many SW-to-NE scratches cover the obverse. At Stage C, clash marks from two Memorial bays show to the left of the neck's back; two short, strong scratches run NNE off the top of LIBERTY's E; several short SW-to-NE scratches lie between the L and I in LIBERTY; and many other scratches, mostly north-south, are spread across the obverse. At Stage D, heavy abrasion has removed the clash marks and most of the Stage C scratches. Long scratches run SW from IN's N and from GOD's G, many NW-to-SE scratches cross the date, many SW-to-NE scratches lie right of the upper head, and a small gouge sits south of the 0 in the date. At Stage E, a die crack runs SSW to NNE through the upper hair, through the middle of the W in WE, and on to the rim. On the reverse at Stage A, left of the U in UNITED are two short vertical gouges, a gouge sits over the left side of the first U in PLURIBUS, a horizontal scratch crosses the steps on the right Memorial base, and many other scratches appear across the reverse. At reverse Stage B, most of the Stage A markers are much weaker. At reverse Stage C, the obverse is now paired with a different reverse die: a gouge runs NNE from the upper right of the second column up to the Memorial ceiling, and a short SSW-to-NNE scratch lies in the lower second bay. At reverse Stage D, the gouge from the top of the second column is much fainter. Reverse Stage E is the same as Stage D. Delma K. Romines submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 23-O-I, and its Coppercoins number is 1970S-1DO-006.
