1970-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-552 with die marriage reference DMR-009, the 1970-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006 is a proof Roosevelt Dime featuring an S/S North repunched mintmark — where the initial S mintmark was placed slightly too far south, and the corrective second punch positioned the final S northward, leaving traces of the original impression visible below the primary letter. The die state documentation lists Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B as mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C as late die state (unconfirmed). The northward directional shift on RPM-006 distinguishes it from RPM-004 (tilted) and RPM-005 (also north) for this same date, demonstrating that multiple dies can share the same general direction of mintmark displacement while still representing distinct working dies with their own unique die marker profiles. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, introduced in 1946, with the obverse portrait of President Roosevelt and the reverse torch-and-branches design. The 1970-S proof was struck at the San Francisco Mint in clad composition (91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel outer layers bonded to pure copper) weighing 2.27 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter. The 1970 proof set mintage of approximately 2.63 million provides the maximum population pool. With six documented RPM varieties for the 1970-S proof dime — covering directional shifts to the north, east, and tilted orientations — this date represents a productive hunting ground for proof RPM collectors, each variety distinguished by its specific displacement direction and its unique supporting die marker constellation documented in the VarietyVista catalog.
