1970 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013
Error
Description
Displaying doubling below the L in LIBERTY and above the 7 in the date, WDDO-013 on the 1970 Lincoln Memorial cent is distinguished by extensive die markers including die gouge dots — small, discrete raised bumps on struck specimens corresponding to individual point-source damage in the die steel. These dot-like gouges, scattered across the die surface in patterns unique to this working die, provide some of the most reliable identification markers available because their random placement cannot be replicated by any other die. Wexler's documentation extends across both surfaces, creating a comprehensive die fingerprint for matching against reference photographs. The doubling locations place WDDO-013 in the same diagnostic category as WDDO-002 and WDDO-009, underscoring why die markers are essential for attribution when multiple varieties share similar displacement. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins exist. The die gouge dots remain visible even when moderate circulation wear has softened the subtle doubling evidence, extending the attributable life of this variety beyond strictly uncirculated condition. Die Markers: Obverse: A die scratch runs from north to south in the field to the left of the back of the neck. Other die scratches can be found on the obverse.
