1970 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
First in John Wexler's doubled die obverse catalog for the 1970 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDO-001 is classified as a strong Class I clockwise spread affecting IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date — a broad doubling footprint touching the three primary design zones collectors examine when screening for DDO varieties. Class I doubling results from rotated misalignment between successive hub impressions: the hub turned slightly clockwise between squeezes, imprinting a secondary image displaced in a consistent arc. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-I and Coppercoins 1970P-1DO-003, this variety benefits from documentation across three major attribution systems. Wexler's die marker notes describe two states: Stage A documents the die's earlier condition, while Stage B — designated Very Late Die State — records the same die after extensive use, when progressive metal fatigue and die cracks have significantly altered its appearance. The VLDS transition offers collectors a visible timeline of die degradation and an additional attribution dimension beyond the doubled die itself. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Die scratches run from NNW to SSE to the right of the forehead, nose, and lips. The Stage A die scratches have been abraded and/or worn away. Reverse Stage A: A die scratch runs from north to south inside the U of UNITED. Numerous die scratches run from SW to NE through the letters of ONE. Numerous die scratches run from west to east between CENT and the bottom of the Memorial.
