1970 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Classified as a Class I counterclockwise spread, WDDO-008 on the 1970 Lincoln Memorial cent shares the same doubling mechanism as WDDO-003 — both result from the hub rotating counterclockwise between impressions during die sinking. The CCW spread affects IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date, producing secondary elements displaced along an arc consistent with counterclockwise rotation. A die scratch running southwest from the rim above the G in GOD serves as a primary die marker, providing identification independent of the doubled die evidence. This scratch appears on struck specimens as a thin raised line extending from the rim toward GOD. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins have been established, placing documentation entirely within the Wexler system. Class I CCW varieties from the 1970-P date illustrate how the same failure mode could occur in either rotational direction, with clockwise varieties (WDDO-001) and counterclockwise varieties (WDDO-003, WDDO-008) documenting both possibilities within the same date's production.
