1970 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-002

Description

DDO-002, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse on the 1970-D Washington quarter with very strong doubling on LIBERTY, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the date, heaviest on LIBERTY. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-102 (Wexler: FS-25-1970D-102). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a very strong counterclockwise spread from a pivot near 9 o'clock on IN and on TRUST, on the date and the designer's initials, on the lower queue and on LIBERTY. Its obverse markers are a scratch heading SW from the B in LIBERTY at its lower left and a SW/NE scratch just left of the L in LIBERTY. On the reverse one scratch heads north from the R in QUARTER at its lower right, and another heads ESE from the middle of the E over to the D in UNITED. CONECA lists the die as 2-O-I, and Ron Pope submitted it. VarietyVista also credits Ron Pope and notes that the reverse is RDV-006. Under UVC-1200 and DMR-005, stage A has both sides in an early die state; a middle stage B and a late stage C are unconfirmed.
