1970-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Notable for incorporating doubling from two separate sources, this 1970-D Washington Quarter doubled die reverse shows a clockwise spread from a pivot at about 1:00 on UNITED, AMERICA, and QUARTER DOLLAR, combined with a spread towards the center of the wreath and QUARTER DOLLAR that originates from the doubled master hub listed as WMHR-001. The WMHR-001 designation means the master hub itself carried doubling before any working dies were made from it, so every die produced from this master hub would inherit the hub's spread in addition to any die-level doubling. On the reverse, a strong die gouge runs north-northwest to south-southeast to the right of the eagle's left leg, and a small die gouge can be found to the left of the U in UNITED. No significant obverse die markers were noted. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1970-D 25' WDDR-003, this variety is a textbook example of how master hub doubling and working die doubling can coexist on a single coin. The 1970-D Washington Quarter was struck in the copper-nickel clad composition adopted after the silver transition of 1965.
