1970-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Recognized as one of the more collectible doubled die reverses in the Washington Quarter series, WDDR-002 from the 1970-D issue displays a Class I counterclockwise spread on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, inside the eagle's wings, and on the wreath. Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-R-III+I, this variety combines Class III and Class I hub doubling characteristics. It was formerly listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-25-1970D-802 before being removed in the sixth edition. This variety can be found in 1970 Mint Sets, making those government-issued sets a productive hunting ground. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running southeast from the lower right of the R in TRUST. On the reverse, a die scratch runs south from the lower bar of the F in OF. The counterclockwise rotational spread affects nearly every major reverse element, making this a visually impressive variety once located. The 1970-D quarter saw moderate mintage, and the prevalence of this variety within Mint Set holders suggests it may have come from a production run specifically allocated to those products.
