Description
1970-D WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1970-D Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A Class I counterclockwise (CCW) spread shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR and E PLURIBUS UNUM, inside the eagle's right wing, plus some of the lower leaves. It is strongest from 7:00 to 8:00 and weakest from 1:00 to 2:00. On the obverse, a short SSW/NNE scratch lies over the W of WE. On the reverse, a short scratch curves north off the eagle's head at the back. Gary Wagnon submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-R-III+V. Cherrypickers listed it as FS-25-1970D-801 but removed it in the sixth edition. Wexler notes the variety turns up in 1970 Mint Sets. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
