1970 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1970-D Washington quarter with strong spread on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and the ERTY of LIBERTY. Both catalogs give it Cherrypickers FS-101, which Wexler writes FS-25-1970D-101 (027.3). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a very strong counterclockwise spread pivoting near 10 o'clock, visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the initials of the designer, the lower part of the queue and ERTY in LIBERTY. On the obverse a diagonal gouge sits in the field well above (north of) the N of IN; on the reverse the eagle's right wing carries a crack down its length. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-V, and Jim Lafferty submitted the coin. VarietyVista credits John A. Wexler with the report and notes that the reverse is RDV-006. It tracks the die under UVC-1199 and DMR-004: stage B has both sides in a middle die state, while an early stage A and a late stage C have not been confirmed.
