1969-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004
Error
Description
RPM-004 on the 1969-S Proof Jefferson Nickel shows the S mintmark punched over a previous S impression to the North (S/S North), attributed by VarietyVista. Die markers are UVC-441 and DMR-006. Stage A documents the obverse in early die state, with a die gouge in the upper R of PLURIBUS as an additional diagnostic. Proof Jefferson Nickels from 1969 were struck at the San Francisco Mint, which had taken over Proof production from Philadelphia in 1968. The S mintmark was applied to individual working dies by hand punch, and misalignment between successive punches produced the documented north-shifted secondary impression on RPM-004. The UVC-441 and DMR-006 die marker codes provide the obverse and reverse diagnostic fingerprints separating this RPM from other 1969-S Jefferson Nickel RPM varieties in the VarietyVista reference. The obverse early die state indicates this coin was struck near the beginning of the die's service life, before significant wear reduced the sharpness of the S/S North displacement. A Proof-series Jefferson Nickel RPM variety with strong die-state documentation.
