Description

Identified by the Wexler Team as 1968-S 10-cent Proof WDDR-005, this Roosevelt Dime shows clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 10 o'clock, visible on ONE DIME, AMERICA, and UNUM. The Class V pivoted hub doubling places the rotation center in the upper-left quadrant, directing maximum CW displacement toward the lower-right where these elements reside on John R. Sinnock's reverse. A significant attribution detail: this variety was struck with a Type 1 reverse, a meaningful distinction because 1968-S proof dimes exist with both Type 1 and Type 2 reverses differentiated by subtle hub design differences. The Type 1 reverse narrows potential die matches and serves as a confirmation checkpoint beyond the doubling pattern itself. As a proof struck at the San Francisco Mint on polished planchets, mirror-like fields enhance detection of the CW spread. The 1968-S proof was struck in clad composition, the first year San Francisco produced proof dimes after the 1965-1967 Special Mint Set interlude.
