1968-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013
Error
Description
Struck as a proof at the San Francisco Mint, the 1968-S Jefferson Nickel WDDO-013 displays Class I rotated hub doubling with a strong clockwise spread on LIBERTY, the star, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the designer's initials. The spread is very similar in character to that of 1968-S Proof WDDO-002 and 1968-S Proof WDDO-006, making careful comparison of die markers essential for correct attribution. On the obverse, a die gouge dot sits on the bottom of the collar near the base of the bust, and a second die gouge appears between the G and O of GOD. Reverse markers include a die gouge between the A and M of AMERICA and another on the upper right tip of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM. The strong spread across multiple obverse design elements combined with proof striking produces crisp doubled impressions that are readily visible under moderate magnification. Collectors sorting through 1968-S proof sets should rely on the collar and GOD die gouges to distinguish this variety from its visually similar counterparts.
