Description

Displaying Class I rotated hub doubling, the 1968-S proof Jefferson nickel WDDO-012 shows a strong clockwise spread on LIBERTY, the star, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the designer's initials. The spread pattern closely resembles that of 1968-S Pr WDDO-006, suggesting both dies experienced a similar rotational misalignment during hubbing. Class I rotated hub doubling occurs when the hub turns slightly between impressions, producing a consistent clockwise or counterclockwise spread across all affected elements. Attributed by John A. Wexler and cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1968-S WDDO-012 Proof, this variety carries specific die markers for authentication. On the obverse, a light diagonal die scratch appears under the chin. The reverse displays a small die dot to the lower right of the long right window and a short horizontal die gouge between and above the short and long left windows. As a proof struck at the San Francisco Mint, the WDDO-012 was produced on polished planchets with mirrored fields, meaning the doubled hub impressions transferred onto a surface that reveals even subtle displacement with clarity.
