1968-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Classified as Class I Rotated Hub Doubling, the 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-009 presents a very nice but weak counterclockwise spread across a broad range of obverse elements: IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and Felix Schlag's FS designer initials. Class I doubling arises from a rotated hub impression during die sinking, where the secondary contact is angularly displaced from the first, and the CCW direction means each affected element's ghost image sits counterclockwise of the primary. Although classified as weak — placing the separation close to the minimum detectable threshold — the sheer number of affected elements spanning the motto, legend, date, and designer initials confirms a genuine hub event rather than mechanical doubling or die deterioration. The 1968-S marked the first year San Francisco resumed proof coin production after the 1965-1967 hiatus during which Special Mint Sets replaced traditional proofs. The reverse die carries a useful attribution marker: a die gouge inside the upper portion of the second U of PLURIBUS.
