1968 (S) Proof Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-028

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1774 and DMR-045 in the VarietyVista system, the 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel DDO-028 exhibits medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials. Struck as a proof, this variety's die stage progression documents three stages. Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B advances to mid-die-state on the obverse, with a die gouge patch developing west of the upper E of E PLURIBUS UNUM. Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The medium spread across multiple obverse design elements creates a broad diagnostic pattern, and the LIBERTY doubling is typically the most accessible pickup point due to the large letter size. The Stage B die gouge patch near the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM provides a useful die-state indicator for specimens that have progressed beyond the early die state.
