1968-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-027
Error
Description
DDO-027 of the 1968-S Proof Jefferson nickel displays medium doubling spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials. Cataloged under UVC-1773 and DMR-044, this variety is tracked across three die stages. Stage A is the early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B reaches mid-die state on the obverse and features a die scratch on the reverse rim from approximately 8:30 to 9:30. Stage C is listed as late die state, unconfirmed. The 1968-S proof represents the resumption of proof coinage after the three-year hiatus during which Special Mint Sets replaced proof sets from 1965 through 1967. Production moved exclusively to the San Francisco Mint for all proof issues beginning in 1968. The medium spread across multiple obverse design elements, including the designer's initials, indicates a hub-doubling event of moderate intensity that affected a broad area of the die face.
