1968-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-018
Error
Description
Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-1340, DMR-024, this 1968 San Francisco Proof Jefferson Nickel displays a medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials, providing multiple diagnostic areas across the obverse. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state; Stage B (mid-die state) develops die scratches between the upper Y of LIBERTY and the 1 of the date, with the reverse in mid-die state; Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. As a proof striking, this coin was produced at the San Francisco Mint using specially prepared dies on polished planchets with mirror-like fields, where doubled die features often appear with enhanced clarity against the reflective surfaces. The 1968 date marks the first year proof coins were struck at San Francisco after proof production resumed following the 1965-1967 hiatus during the Special Mint Set period. Jefferson Nickels are composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel. The medium spread across five distinct obverse design elements makes DDO-018 one of the more prominent doubled die varieties for the 1968-S proof issue.
