1968-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008
Error
Description
Carrying a medium spread across IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials, this 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel obverse doubled die is a well-documented VarietyVista variety. The die progressed through three identifiable stages. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B is mid die state, also unconfirmed. Stage C, late die state, brought two defining markers: a die gouge dot appeared to the right of the upper last T in TRUST, and die scratches extend along the rim from the K-9 to K-3 clock positions running clockwise; the reverse is also LDS at this point. Permanent anchors are UVC-1330 and DMR-014. Proof Jefferson Nickels of this era were struck exclusively at the San Francisco Mint. The 1968-S Proof was the first Proof coinage issued by San Francisco after the interruption of centralized proof production from 1965 to 1967. Doubled dies on obverse devices of proof coinage are particularly prized because the polished fields and frosted devices of proof strikes make doubling far more legible than on circulation strikes, rewarding careful examination.
