Description

A second repunched mintmark variety from the 1968-D Jefferson Nickel, WRPM-003 represents a distinct die from the more prominent WRPM-002, with this example cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #2 for the date. While both varieties originate from the same hand-punching process that introduced the D mintmark onto working dies, each RPM reflects a unique combination of punch angle, depth, and positional offset, making every repunched mintmark die a one-of-a-kind artifact. The hand-punching method required a Mint employee to position a small letter punch over the designated mintmark area and strike it with a mallet, and even minor variations in hand pressure or alignment between successive blows produced discernible differences. Like its companion WRPM-002, this variety dates to the first year mintmarks returned to Jefferson Nickels following the 1965-1967 moratorium enacted during the nationwide coin shortage. The CONECA RPM #2 designation places it as the second-most-significant RPM cataloged for 1968-D Nickels, and the Wexler WRPM-003 attribution provides a parallel reference number.
