Error
Description
A D/D East repunched mintmark distinguishes this 1968-D Jefferson Nickel, documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-578 / DMR-005 showing notable early deterioration. Stage A with obverse and reverse at EDS; Stage B at EMDS develops a die crack across the upper hair and a die crack across the bust on the obverse, with the reverse also at EMDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The dual die cracks appearing at the EMDS stage suggest the obverse die had pre-existing structural weaknesses or was subjected to excessive striking pressure early in its service life. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1968, the first year proof production shifted exclusively to San Francisco after the 1965-1967 mintmark-free period.
