1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-026

Description

Cataloged as the twenty-sixth 1964 proof Kennedy Half Dollar DDO by the Wexler Team (reference: 1964 50c Pr WDDO-026), this variety extends the documentation of a die population that ranks among the most thoroughly studied in modern U.S. numismatics. At WDDO-026, the catalog has moved well past the initial wave of prominent, easily spotted varieties and into territory where each new entry may represent a die with more subtle or localized doubling — still diagnostically real and mechanistically identical in origin to the earlier-numbered varieties, but potentially requiring more careful examination to identify and attribute. The 1964 proof Kennedy Half Dollar's significance transcends its status as a coin variety: it was the nation's first opportunity to hold a tangible memorial to President Kennedy in their hands, and the emotional weight of that moment drove both the massive proof set sales (3,950,762 sets) and the subsequent intensity of collector scrutiny that continues to uncover new varieties decades later. Gilroy Roberts' portrait, with Kennedy facing left in the classic presidential profile pose, was deliberately kept close to the inaugural medal design to maintain authenticity and emotional resonance. Struck in 90% silver at the full 12.5-gram half dollar weight, each WDDO-026 specimen carries the doubled die attribution as an additional layer of numismatic significance atop the already powerful combination of first-year-of-issue, memorial coin, and last-year-of-silver-composition status. Spread analysis under magnification confirms this die's unique placement in the catalog.
