Description

Proof doubled die varieties occupy a special position in Lincoln cent collecting because the proof manufacturing process simultaneously creates the conditions for variety formation and the surface quality that makes varieties detectable, and the 1963 Proof WDDO-066 illustrates this dual dynamic. The Philadelphia Mint's proof die production line in 1963 relied on multi-impression hubbing — pressing the obverse working hub into a die blank several times to achieve proper design depth — and any fractional displacement between these impressions produced a doubled image that became structurally part of the die. Chrome plating, frosting, and polishing followed, transforming the die into a proof-quality striking instrument without altering the embedded hubbing anomaly. The 1963 proof cent holds the distinction of being among the last proof Lincoln cents produced before the coin shortage crisis led Congress to suspend proof set production from 1965 through 1967 and to remove mint marks from all United States coinage during that period. The total 1963 proof cent output of 3,075,645 pieces, combined with the limited die life inherent in proof production, constrains the surviving population of WDDO-066 to a modest number. Identification requires magnified examination of the obverse design elements and comparison with Wexler reference materials. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet, the coin bears the Brenner portrait and Gasparro Memorial reverse.
