1963 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent - Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-075

Description

Closing out the 1963 proof Lincoln cent DDO catalog, WDDO-075 is a Class V pivoted doubled die obverse exhibiting a close counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 10 o'clock, with the doubling visible on the bottom of the date numerals and the underside of Lincoln's bowtie. This classification indicates that the working hub rotated slightly around a fixed point near the upper-left portion of the die during the multi-impression hubbing process, producing a spread that radiates outward from the pivot and is most pronounced at the points farthest from the rotation center. The die is further identified by extensive die markers on both sides of the coin. On the obverse, a short diagonal die gouge appears to the right of the top of the N in IN, a die gouge dot sits just above the hair midway between the E of WE and the first T of TRUST, and a short vertical die scratch runs between the upper U and S of TRUST. On the reverse, a light die scratch runs nearly parallel to the lettering through the center of the U in UNITED almost to the rim, a small die gouge appears to the right of the center of the D in UNITED, a small die gouge dot can be found below the second S of STATES, and a short vertical die scratch sits above the right side of the F in OF. These markers collectively create a diagnostic fingerprint that distinguishes WDDO-075 from every other 1963 proof DDO variety. Struck from the 3,075,645-piece proof cent production at the Philadelphia Mint, this variety combines the mirror fields and frosted devices of proof manufacture with genuinely attributable hub doubling and distinctive die markers. The coin was struck on a 3.11-gram, 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet at 19.05 mm diameter.

A short, vertical die scratch can be found between the upper U and S of TRUST. Reverse: A light die scratch runs nearly parallel to the lettering through the center of the U in UNITED almost to the rim. A small die gouge can be found to the right of the center of the D in UNITED. A small die gouge (dot) can be found below the 2nd S of STATES. A short, vertical die scratch can be found above the right side of the F in OF.
