1963-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1963-D 25¢ WDDR-001, this Washington Silver Quarter displays a spread toward the center on QUARTER DOLLAR, UNITED STATES, the wreath, and the arrow heads — a convergent doubling pattern where the secondary hub impression shifted inward, pushing doubled images toward the coin’s center across multiple reverse design elements. Obverse die markers include a die crack running west-southwest to east-northeast through the upper hair, and a die crack running across the base of the bust and the lower queue (ponytail) extending into the field to the left of the 1 in the date, reaching almost two-thirds of the way to the rim. Reverse markers include a die crack down the eagle’s right wing into the field above the Q in QUARTER, and a die scratch running northwest from the center of the P in PLURIBUS. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The 1963-D Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter. John Flanagan designed the Washington portrait obverse adapted from the Houdon bust, and the heraldic eagle reverse featuring a wreath and arrows. The 1963-D is part of the final era of silver quarter production before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver composition for circulating quarters. As WDDR-001 for the 1963-D date, this holds the primary catalog position. The extensive obverse die crack system — running through the hair, across the bust base, and extending nearly to the rim — documents significant structural failure that provides a strong secondary identification framework alongside the reverse doubling features.
