1963-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista under internal tracking code UVC-426 and die marriage reference DMR-002, this 1963-D Jefferson Nickel displays a D/D North repunched mintmark and holds the primary catalog position as RPM-001 for the date-mint combination. The northward displacement means the initial D punch landed slightly lower than the final corrected position, with the remnant of the first impression visible below (south of) the primary D. This directional characteristic is among the most straightforward to detect under magnification because the vertical offset creates visible extra metal at the bottom of the D where the two overlapping impressions diverge. Die stage documentation tracks three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse are at mid-die-state, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Denver Mint in 1963, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The 1963 date precedes the three-year mint mark hiatus (1965-1967) by just two years, placing it among the last pre-hiatus Denver mintmark varieties for the Jefferson Nickel series. As RPM-001, this variety likely represents either the first documented or most visually prominent D/D variety for 1963-D, and its northward displacement provides a clean diagnostic that differs from the rotational or east-west varieties that occupy higher RPM numbers in the same date's catalog. Examination at 10x magnification focused on the lower serifs and base of the D mintmark best reveals the northward shift of the final impression relative to the initial placement.
