CU-5c-1963D-01 Rim Cud

Description

Only known rim cud for the 1963 Denver Jefferson Nickel, cataloged by Cuds on Coins as of September 2013 with no independent cross-reference numbers assigned. A major die fracture at the rim caused a section of the die to break away entirely, and the resulting void filled with planchet metal during subsequent strikes, producing the characteristic raised, featureless blob at the coin's edge. Denver's 1963 nickel production reached approximately 276 million pieces — a substantial output that drove dies through extensive use. Despite this high volume, only one cud has been documented, suggesting that Denver's die management practices in 1963 were effective at retiring damaged dies before widespread production of cud-bearing coins. Alternatively, the relative scarcity of documented cuds for this date may reflect gaps in reporting rather than absence of occurrence, as many cud varieties go unreported when found in circulation or bulk lots. The 1963-D nickel belongs to Felix Schlag's original Monticello design period, which continued until the 2004 Westward Journey redesign.
