1962 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

The primary doubled die obverse for the 1962-D Washington Quarter, WDDO-001 displays a Class II spread directed toward the center on LIBERTY — a distinctive diagnostic where hub distortion pulls the secondary contours inward rather than in a uniform directional spread. Class II distorted hub doubling creates non-uniform displacement across the die face, and the inward pull on LIBERTY's letters provides a reliable attribution target. Obverse die markers include numerous light die scratches running in a southwest-to-northeast orientation both to the left and right of Washington's lower bust, creating a pattern of fine parallel lines in the field surrounding the portrait truncation. No significant reverse markers have been noted. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1962-D 25c WDDO-001, this Denver Mint issue was struck during the penultimate years of 90% silver Washington Quarter production — the silver composition would continue through 1964 before the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated copper-nickel clad. John Flanagan's obverse portrait of George Washington, in continuous use since 1932, appears on this 6.25-gram coin. Examine LIBERTY for the Class II inward spread, then confirm with the numerous light die scratches flanking the lower bust on the obverse.
