Description

Identified by light spread on LIBERTY, this 1962-D Washington Quarter DDO-004 develops a die crack on Washington's forehead at late die state, adding a valuable attribution diagnostic. Die markers include UVC-1018 and DMR-005. Three die stages document the progression: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C where the obverse shows a die crack on the forehead in late die state, with the reverse also in late die state. The forehead crack is characteristic of Washington Quarter dies, where the highest relief on the portrait creates concentrated stress that frequently initiates cracking. Collectors encountering a 1962-D quarter with both light LIBERTY doubling and a forehead crack can confidently attribute it to DDO-004 at Stage C. The 1962-D was struck on 90% silver planchets at the Denver Mint during the final years of the silver composition era. Light spread on LIBERTY — the inscription closest to the rim — can be detected by comparing letter stroke widths against a normal example under moderate magnification.
