Description

Distinguished by a rotational displacement rather than a simple directional shift, the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent RPM-015 is classified as D/D Rotated CCW (counterclockwise), meaning the initial mintmark impression was tilted at a slight angle relative to the final, correctly oriented punch. Where most repunched mintmarks show a secondary image offset in a cardinal direction — north, south, east, or west — a rotated RPM reveals the shadow of the first "D" canted to one side, creating a distinctive angular doubling that is often easier to detect under magnification because the misalignment affects the entire outline of the letter rather than just one edge. This variety is tracked under VarietyVista references UVC-871 and DMR-021, with three stages documented. Stage A represents early die state (EDS) but remains unconfirmed, indicating that the earliest known specimens have not yet been positively verified for this die. Stage B, in mid-die state (MDS), introduces a die scratch running from the lower serif of the D mintmark to the southwest toward Lincoln's vest — a useful diagnostic that connects the mintmark area to the bust and provides a quick visual reference point for attribution. The reverse has also advanced to MDS. Stage C (LDS) is unconfirmed. The counterclockwise rotational character of RPM-015 sets it apart from the predominantly directional displacements seen in RPM-009 through RPM-014, giving variety specialists a visually distinct target within the 1962-D RPM population.
