Description

Displaying the secondary mintmark impression displaced to the north, the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent RPM-011 is classified as a D/D North variety, meaning the initial "D" punch landed slightly above the position where the final, accepted impression was placed. This northward displacement creates a characteristic shadow or notch visible at the top of the primary mintmark when examined under magnification. VarietyVista experts have noted that RPM-011 may represent the same obverse die as RPM-014, which also exhibits a D/D North orientation; confirmation awaits the discovery of a mid-die state specimen that could bridge the gap between the two catalog entries and establish whether they share identical die characteristics at the same point in the die deterioration sequence. The variety is tracked as UVC-865 / DMR-015, with die progression documented in three stages. In Stage A, a diagonal die scratch above the I of IN and a light die scratch running from the Y of LIBERTY to the back of Lincoln's coat mark the obverse, while both surfaces are in early die state (EDS). By Stage B, the diagnostic diagonal scratch above the I has weakened substantially — a natural consequence of the die steel eroding under repeated striking pressure — placing the die in early-to-mid die state (EMDS), and the reverse has similarly progressed. Stage C (LDS) remains unconfirmed. The presence of specific, identifiable die scratches on the obverse gives RPM-011 a stronger attribution fingerprint than many of its neighboring RPM entries, making it a rewarding target for collectors who enjoy tracing die deterioration through progressive stages.

D/D North.  Possibly the same die as RPM-014.  Need a MDS to confirm.
