Description

The most extensively documented repunched mintmark variety in the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent series, RPM-008 spans three die marriage records and eight die stages that chronicle an obverse die's remarkably long production life across three successive reverse die pairings. The initial marriage, UVC-861 / DMR-011, begins with Stage A in early-to-mid die state (EMDS) for both faces. Stage B (MDS) introduces a die crack on the right cornice tip. Stage C (LMDS) brings significant deterioration — a die chip on the right cornice, die chips on columns #11 and #12, a die chip in the lower E of AMERICA, and a depression in the lower C of AMERICA. Stage D (LMDS) adds a die chip in the lower C of AMERICA. The reverse die was then changed, creating UVC-862 / DMR-012. Stage E (LDS) records a die crack running north-south through the hair on the obverse, while the replacement reverse begins in MDS with a die chip on column #12 and a depression on the right cornice. Stage F (VLDS) shows a large die chip on the right cornice and a depression at the right eave. Stage G (VLDS) sees a large die break at the right eave. A second reverse die change created UVC-1151 / DMR-024, with Stage H showing the obverse in very late die state (VLDS) and the second replacement reverse in LDS with a die chip on column #11. This eight-stage, three-reverse documentation provides an unparalleled window into Denver Mint production practices, demonstrating that a single obverse die could be maintained in service through three reverse partners and multiple phases of progressive deterioration before final retirement.
