Description

Displaying a very strong spread toward the center on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the designer's initials JS, this fourth documented doubled die obverse for the 1961 Roosevelt Silver Dime represents one of the more dramatic hub doubling varieties in the series. The strong centrifugal spread — where design elements shift toward the coin's center — indicates a specific class of hub misalignment during die production that created pronounced doubling visible without high magnification. Die markers for attribution include a pattern of die scratches above the eyelid, long north-south die scratches at the forehead, and northeast-southwest die scratches throughout the ear on the obverse, with a vertical die scratch on the lower inner loop of the second S of STATES on the reverse. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1961 10¢ Pr WDDO-004, the "Pr" designation indicates this variety occurs on proof strikes from the San Francisco Mint.
