1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1961 proof Roosevelt Dime doubled die obverse is cataloged as Wexler 1961 10-cent Proof WDDO-001 and shows a spread toward center on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, the L in LIBERTY, and the designer's initials, with tripling visible on the date. On the obverse, a small die dot appears at the upper ear left, and a small die chip is present on the forehead. On the reverse, a series of die chips appear below the horizontal bar of the first A in AMERICA, and a short vertical die scratch is visible on the lower left side of the F in OF. As a proof issue, this dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies to produce mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Doubled dies on proof coinage are particularly notable because proof dies receive additional preparation and inspection, making hub doubling errors less expected. The 1961 proof dime was struck in 90% silver composition during the final years before the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated the transition to clad. Tripling on the date indicates three distinct hub impressions left overlapping traces, a more dramatic effect than standard doubling.
