Description
1961PR-1DEO-002T, a 1961 proof Lincoln Memorial cent obverse, carries trails in two directions from some of the letters in LIBERTY: lines off the tops run at 350°, just west of north, and lines off the bottoms at 170°, just east of south. In the number, PR after the date marks a proof, 1 the cent, DEO the obverse side, 002 the file and T the trails. At stage B the obverse has no markers, while the reverse shows circular lathe lines in bays 2, 3, 9 and 10; a later stage C adds two small scratches just right of CENT's T. TrailDies credits Robert Pelletier with the die and with the stage C coin. Polishing of the die with a rotary buff is the explanation most often given; a minority sees die-to-hub movement instead.
Die Markers
- Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – none noted.
- Reverse is MDS – circular lathe lines are seen in bays 2, 3, 9 and 10.
