Description

Opening the sequence of documented doubled die reverse varieties for the 1961 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-001 displays a spread towards the center on ONE CENT, the designer's initials FG, the lower right portion of the Memorial building, OF AMERICA, and slightly on the letters of PLURIBUS. The strongest doubling concentration appears on the lower right quadrant of the reverse, where the centripetal displacement is most pronounced — an observation that helps collectors zero in on the area of maximum visibility when searching for this variety. The inward-directed spread indicates a Class II distorted hub doubling event during die production, where the secondary hub impression shifted toward the coin's center relative to the first impression. Neither the obverse nor reverse presents significant die markers, so attribution depends primarily on identifying the characteristic doubling pattern itself. Photographic documentation of this variety was contributed by Brian Ribar, whose images have been instrumental in establishing the visual baseline for attribution. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1961 1¢ Pr WDDR-001 with no other known cross-references, this Proof doubled die reverse occupies the first position in a seventeen-variety DDR population for the 1961 Proof date — a remarkably large family that reflects the frequency of reverse hubbing anomalies on dies prepared for Proof cent production during the early Memorial era.
