1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014

Description

Discovered by Gary G. Wagnon on a 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel, WDDO-014 stands as one of the strongest doubled die obverses in the proof nickel series, delivering very strong center-directed spread on LIBERTY, the Monticello star, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The spread decreases slightly from left to right on IN GOD WE TRUST, following a graduated pattern consistent with Class II distorted hub doubling where misalignment varies across the die face. The obverse carries a short vertical die gouge to the right of center of the E in WE as its diagnostic marker, while the reverse shows no significant markers. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1961 WDDO-014 Proof, this Philadelphia Mint issue combines the strong center-directed displacement with proof surface quality to produce a variety where the doubling is visible with minimal magnification against the reflective fields. The very strong spread across four separate design elements simultaneously makes WDDO-014 one of the more accessible and visually rewarding proof nickel doubled die obverses for the year.
