1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Proof strikes from the early 1960s are prized for their mirror fields and frosted devices, and the 1961 Proof WDDO-004 adds Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) to that appeal. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this doubled die obverse shows doubling on LIBERTY, the star between WE and LIBERTY, and the date — three widely separated elements all affected by the same hub misalignment. A die gouge to the upper right of the star provides an additional marker unique to this die. The reverse pairs with WDDR-016, creating a dual-variety die marriage where both sides carry documented hub doubling. Class II doubling occurs when the working hub deforms under pressure during hubbing, causing design elements to shift radially rather than uniformly. Proof Jefferson Nickels of this era were struck at Philadelphia on polished planchets with polished dies, receiving multiple impressions for sharp detail. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait, struck on 75% copper and 25% nickel at 21.2mm, was in its twenty-fourth year.
