1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

Bearing a Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) classification, the 1961 Jefferson Nickel proof WDDO-013 replaced an earlier listing that was delisted after being reclassified as a doubled working hub rather than a doubled working die. This distinction matters: a doubled working die results from misalignment between the hub and an individual working die, producing a variety confined to coins struck from that single die, whereas a doubled working hub would transfer its doubling to every working die produced from it, creating a much broader population of affected coins. The replacement WDDO-013 exhibits genuine Class II distortion spread on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star to the left of Jefferson's portrait, and the date, with the doubling intensity varying across these three areas. Die markers confirm attribution: on the obverse, a die dot sits below the N of IN and below the G of GOD, while the reverse carries a slanted die scratch to the upper left of the long right window and another slanted die scratch to the right of the small right window of Felix Schlag's Monticello design. Brian A. Ribar documented this variety, cataloged under Wexler reference 1961 WDDO-013 Proof. The 1961 proof Jefferson Nickel was struck exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel alloy on polished planchets, and its proof surfaces make the Class II spread readily visible under moderate magnification.
