Description

The 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-011 is a Class II distorted hub doubled die obverse attributed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under 1961 WDDO-011 Proof by Brian A. Ribar. This variety replaced an earlier listing delisted as a doubled working hub, reflecting revised understanding of the die production event. Doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST decreases from left to right across the motto — a directional characteristic useful for distinguishing this Class II variety from others in the 1961 proof sequence. A die dot at the upper left of the small left window of Monticello provides an identifying reverse marker. Class II distorted hub doubling results from misalignment between successive hubbing operations, creating a spread that follows the distortion geometry rather than a simple rotational pattern. Philadelphia Mint proof production in 1961 used polished dies and elevated striking pressure to produce proof surfaces, and these conditions make hub displacement visible on the mirrored fields of surviving examples.
