1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

This Proof Jefferson Nickel carries Class II distorted hub doubling and replaces the original WDDO-001 listing, which was delisted because it was determined to be a doubled working hub rather than a doubled working die. The revised variety shows close Class II doubling on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the star, and the date. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 1961 WDDO-001 Proof. Obverse die markers include die gouges on the rim above the date. The reverse displays a vertical series of die dots to the right of the small left window on Monticello. The distinction between a doubled working hub and a doubled working die is significant in die variety classification: hub doubling affects all dies produced from that hub, while die doubling is unique to a single working die. By delisting the original entry as hub doubling and replacing it with this revised listing, the catalog reflects a more precise attribution. Proof Jefferson Nickel doubled dies from the early 1960s were struck during a period of high collector interest in proof sets.
