1960 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-017
Error
Description
VarietyVista's DDO-017 for the 1960 Roosevelt silver dime, tracked under UVC-350 with die markers reference DMR-019, shows a light spread on three obverse elements: the date, the designer's initials JS (top to bottom spread direction), and IN GOD WE TRUST. The top-to-bottom spread specification on the initials provides a directional diagnostic — the secondary image sits below the primary one on the JS monogram at the truncation of Roosevelt's bust, a detail that helps distinguish DDO-017 from other 1960 dime DDOs where spread may occur in different directions. An unusual asynchronous die-state progression characterizes this variety's three documented stages. Stage A shows the obverse in early die state while the reverse is already at mid die state — a discrepancy that can occur when an obverse die is married to a reverse die that has already seen service with a different obverse. Stage B advances both sides, with the obverse reaching MDS and the reverse progressing to late die state. Stage C at full LDS remains unconfirmed. This staggered die-state progression is valuable diagnostic information because it means Stage A coins will show fresh obverse detail paired with a slightly worn reverse, a combination that can initially seem anomalous to collectors unfamiliar with die-marriage sequencing. The 1960 Philadelphia Roosevelt dime, with its large and small date varieties that dominated collector attention that year, had a combined mintage of approximately 70 million pieces in 90% silver. DDO-017 adds a light but genuine doubled die to the rich variety landscape of this already heavily collected date.
