1960 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-014
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1960 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-014 on the Roosevelt Silver Dime displays a light quad spread on TRUST and the designer's initials JS (for John R. Sinnock), with light spread also visible on the date, IN GOD WE, and the letters LIB of LIBERTY. A quad spread indicates four distinct hub impressions are detectable, an unusually high number that implies the die underwent multiple hubbing sequences with slight positional shifts between each impression. The Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver (2.50 grams, 17.91 mm diameter) — the last composition of the silver Roosevelt Dime series before the 1965 transition to clad coinage eliminated silver from circulating dimes. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-347 and DMR-016 with three documented die stages: Stage A at Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid Die State showing a die gouge dot on the neck under the ear with the reverse also at MDS, and Stage C with both obverse and reverse at Late Die State. The neck die gouge appearing as a dot below the ear provides a reliable obverse authentication marker visible under low magnification. The quad spread on TRUST and the designer's initials is the most diagnostic feature, as four overlapping impressions create a distinctive thickening and slight separation pattern that exceeds what normal single-impression or even double-impression varieties produce.
