1960 Proof Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005 / DDO-007

Description

Found in Small Date sets, the 1960 proof Roosevelt dime DDO-007, which Wexler numbers WDDO-005, is a doubled die obverse with a strong spread on LIBERTY that fades across the word. Both catalogs cite it as FS-104 in the Cherrypickers' Guide; Wexler writes FS-10-1960-104 and notes it was removed in the 6th Edition. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong spread toward the center on the designer's initials, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY and the date. On the obverse a gouge (dot) sits on top of the 0 of the date and a N/S scratch lies left of the upright of the last T of TRUST. On the reverse an E/W scratch crosses the upper O of ONE from the center to the right, with a second E/W scratch, set lower, on the upper left of that O. Frank Baumann submitted the coin, upgraded courtesy of Kevin Flynn, and CONECA lists the die as 7-O-II. VarietyVista, crediting Chris Pilliod, adds a medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials and the 6 of the date, and notes the coin can be found in Small Date sets. Under its marker codes UVC-340 and DMR-009, both sides are in an early die state at stage A, a middle die state at stage B, and a late die state at stage C.
