1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1960 proof Roosevelt Dime doubled die obverse displays strong doubling on the J in designer John R. Sinnock's initials, accompanied by lighter doubling on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. The concentration of doubling on the designer's initials — a small, detailed element near the truncation of Roosevelt's neck — indicates that the hub shift during die production was most pronounced in this area, with diminishing displacement visible on the larger date numerals and motto. Proof dies for the 1960 Roosevelt Dime were prepared at the Philadelphia Mint, where proof coins were produced using specially polished planchets and dies struck at reduced speed with multiple impressions to achieve their characteristic mirror-like fields and frosted devices. Specific die markers aid in attribution: on the obverse, a short die scratch runs from southwest to northeast above the G in GOD, while on the reverse, a short vertical die scratch can be found inside the lower portion of the first A in AMERICA. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known, making the Wexler designation WDDO-019 the primary catalog entry for this variety. The 1960 proof dime was part of an annual proof set produced during a period of growing collector interest in proof coinage — the same year that saw the famous 1960 Small Date and Large Date Lincoln Cent varieties that captured national attention. Roosevelt Dime proof doubled dies from the early 1960s are actively sought by variety specialists who appreciate the enhanced visibility that proof surfaces provide for examining doubling.
