1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

A D/D South variety from the Denver Mint, this VarietyVista-documented Washington Silver Quarter developed extensive die cracking at Stage C with cracks spreading across both the reverse eagle and the obverse portrait. Die markers UVC-0972 / DMR-004: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die crack down the eagle's right wing at MDS and obverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack east from the eagle's head at LDS, the right wing crack extending to the leaf and through E PLU of PLURIBUS, and a die crack across bust into queue at LDS. The wing crack's progression from Stage B to C — growing from the wing alone to encompassing the leaf and inscription — documents how structural failure propagates along stress paths. Designed by John Flanagan, struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm in the penultimate year before silver was removed from quarters in 1965.
